Smith Millenium Bridge  Smith Millenium Bridge

PLYMOUTH -
Smith Millennium Bridge is at the site of the first bridge built across the Baker River in 1790, named after the farmer who donated the land. It was rebuilt in 1825, but washed away in a flood in 1850. Rebuilt as a covered bridge, it was in use until 1991, when the town closed it for safety reasons. During discussions as to repairing it, the structure was destroyed by an arsonist in 1993. The town voted to replace it as it was, and construction started in 1999.

With new laminate technology, and computer design, it is said to be the strongest covered bridge in the world. The long truss design, with added arches, is 170' 10" overall. The height is 60', and the width outside is 49', wall to wall 31', and the walkway is 6'6". It has photocell controlled indoor lighting, and a heat detecting fire alarm system. The load rating is 80,000 pounds, the only timber bridge designed to meet federal highway standards the same as for interstate highways. The Smith Millennium Bridge was completed at a cost of $3,600,000, and was dedicated on June 8, 2001.
